Getting Here

Travel to Kokrobite

Most international travelers to Kokrobite will arrive by air, flying into Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in the Ghanaian capital of Accra. Several international airlines, including British Airways and Delta Airlines, offer flights from major cities in North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. With prior arrangement, the staff of the Akpe Cultural Centre and Hotel will provide transfer both from and to the airport. Ask us about cost for this service.

Practical Details

Money & Electricity

Ghana’s currency is the cedi (GHS). Foreign currency can be freely exchanged at most banks and Forex Bureau locations, but talk to the Akpe receptionist about where to get the best exchange rates. The worst rates are at the airport! Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards. They are accepted in major hotels, restaurants, banks, businesses, and major supermarkets. Tipping for service is common practice in Ghana.

Electric power in Ghana is 230 volts at 50 hertz. Electrical outlets accept either 3-pronged British-style or sometimes 2-pronged Continental European type plugs or converters. The outlets at Akpe accept both.

Connectivity

Cell Service

To avoid roaming charges, most international travelers will need either an appropriate eSIM or local SIM card, which can be purchased in Ghana with a valid ID — make sure your phone is not SIM-locked. There are three primary cell service carriers in Ghana: MTN, Telecel (formerly Vodafone), and AirtelTigo; MTN generally has the broadest coverage. Glo is another, lower-cost option. Almost all service is on a prepaid basis. You can purchase a SIM card at the airport, but that is usually the most expensive way to go. The staff at Akpe is happy to help you get the SIM card you need in Kokrobite.
